Australia's Largest Magazine Publisher Converts to Adobe InDesign

Switch from QuarkXPress to InDesign Helps Publisher Save Millions while Promoting Creativity

February 20, 2002

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Adobe Systems Incorporated, the leader in network publishing, today announced that Australia's largest magazine publisher, Australian Consolidated Press (ACP), is transitioning to Adobe InDesign from QuarkXPress software. Publisher of more than 65 percent of Australian magazines including popular titles such as Cosmopolitan, ACP is currently producing 14 of its 58 titles using InDesign and expects to convert its remaining titles by September 2002.

"Adobe InDesign is the future of design and publishing," said Michael Mangan, chief information officer, ACP. "Our conversion to InDesign is allowing us to deliver the best publications to our readers. At the same time, the improvements in workflow have been phenomenal since converting to InDesign."

InDesign is streamlining both design and production workflows at ACP. Designers can easily incorporate artwork created in Photoshop or Illustrator software into magazine layouts. The production staff accepts advertisements from customers as Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files and converts InDesign layouts to Adobe PDF for printing, allowing ACP to transition to a completely digital publishing process. As a result of moving to InDesign and a digital workflow based on Adobe PDF, ACP will save millions of dollars annually.

In addition to increasing efficiency, adoption of Adobe InDesign at ACP is allowing the cutting-edge publisher to maximize creativity. ACP designers have eagerly adopted InDesign because of its easy learning curve and innovative features such as transparency and the ability to generate sophisticated tables.

"When top publishers such as ACP begin adopting InDesign and digital workflows based on Adobe PDF, we know that we are providing the tools that publishers need to thrive in today's competitive marketplace," said Susan Altman Prescott, vice president of cross-media publishing at Adobe. "We are actively supporting ACP as they transition their entire magazine line to InDesign for improved productivity, creativity, and additional cost savings."
